Hokie ClubSEATTLE, Wash. – Junior Logan Shinholser of the Virginia Tech diving squad opened day one of the 2012 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, as he placed seventh in the 1-meter event to be named an All-American Thursday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
"I couldn't be more pleased with Logan's performance on the 1-meter," commented head diving coach Ron Piemonte. "He was super consistent and competitive, which can only help him as he moves into the next events. He is proving why he was the strongest diver at the ACCs this year."
Shinholser started his day off with a preliminary score of 355.35 to place in the top eight and advance to the finals in the men’s 1-meter event. Later that night, the ACC Champion improved his score to 374.80 to place seventh to be named an All-American and score the first 12 points for the H2Okies.
Teammate Ryan Hawkins also competed for Tech. The sophomore came in with a score of 304.85 to place 19th out of 34 competitors.
"Ryan showed some good consistency during the 1-meter as well, and I am looking forward to the next two days of competition for him in representing the H2Okies," added Piemonte.
Greg Mahon kicked off the NCAA Championships for the H2Okies. The junior swam a preliminary time of 1:46.53 to finish 31st overall.
The H2Okies will return to action tomorrow for their strongest day of the Championships as all four ACC Championscompete. Mahon will jump in the water for the 100 butterfly, while Zach McGinnis will compete in the 100 backstroke. Divers, Shinholser and Hawkins will battle in the 3-meter event. The first event of the preliminaries, the 200 medley relay, will begin at 2 p.m. eastern time, followed by the finals at 10 p.m.
