Hokie ClubBUFFALO, N.Y. – Logan Kline of the Virginia Tech women’s diving squad automatically qualified for the 2012 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, as she placed second in the women’s 3-meter event on the second day of the NCAA Zone A Qualifying meet at the Alumni Arena Natatorium.
“For Logan Kline to get the automatic spot was amazing today,” commented head diving coach Ron Piemonte. “Logan tipped her feet on the board at the beginning of the day and to watch her fight her way back for a second-place finish was pretty amazing.”
After receiving a score of 320.60 in the preliminary round, Kline brought in a score of 292.90 in the finals to finish second to automatically advance to the 2012 NCAA Women’s Swimming in Diving Championships which will begin Thursday in Auburn, Ala.
In addition to Kline, freshman Kelli Stockton placed in the top five, as she recorded a score of 282.80 in the prelims before scoring a 301.00 to place fourth. Following Stockton was Kaylea Arnett, as she placed fifth with a final score of 272.60, after bringing in 293.40 in the prelims.
Sara Mokhtari rounded out the pack for the women as she finished tenth with a score of 294.35.
Ryan Hawkins led the Tech men, as he placed third with a final score of 346.75, while Logan Shinholser followed in fourth place bringing in a score of 336.40.
Kyle Butts and John Trope finished in the top-15. Butts came in at the 11th spot with a score of 285.80, while Trope followed in 12th with a final score of 273.60.
“Going into the final day of competition with four divers qualified for the NCAAs is pretty exciting,” added Piemonte, “We have Logan Shinholser and Ryan Hawkins for the men, and Kaylea Arnett and Logan Kline for the women. It has really been an exciting contest so far.”
The final day of competition begins on Sunday with the platform event. The winner of each platform event will get the automatic qualifying spot for the NCAAs.
