Hokies advance during first day of tournament play

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 25 Luka Somen advanced in singles and teamed up with Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci in doubles as the No. 27 ranked Tech duo moved on to the semifinals of the white draw during the opening day of the UVA Ranked+1 Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.

Somen secured a 7-5, 6-1 decision over East Tennessee State’s Sander Gille in the orange draw. The Hokies’ player will move on to the quarterfinals of the draw to face UVA’s Philippe Oudshoorn on Saturday.

In doubles play, Somen and Tocci teamed up for a win over Dominic Hodgson and Julian Sullivan of N.C. State. Tech picked up the win with a score of 8-5.

The Virginia Tech pair moves on to the semifinals and will face UVA’s Oudshoorn and Justin Shane.

Play will resume on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center.
