GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech forward Jeff Allen has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, for the week ending Feb. 6, 2011. The honor is voted on by a committee of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.
Allen, a senior from Washington, D.C., recorded a pair of double-doubles in conference road games this past week. He opened the week with a 15-point, 11-rebound performance in a 77-69 win at NC State Wednesday. In Saturday’s 58-56 loss at Boston College, Allen scored 25 points, grabbed 19 rebounds and had three steals. Allen now has four consecutive double-doubles, 11 this season and 39 for his career, which is tops among active ACC players.
This is the second time this season that Allen has earned the award. He also was honored on Jan. 10. This is the fourth time this season that a Virginia Tech player has earned this honor, following Malcolm Delaney on Nov. 29, Allen on Jan. 10 and Erick Green on Jan. 24. This marks the third time in Allen’s career that he has garnered this award. North Carolina’s Kendall Marshall and Harrison Barnes share the ACC Rookie of the Week this week.
Allen currently is second in the ACC in rebounding. He is the leader among active ACC players in career rebounds and steals and is second in career blocked shots and fourth in career scoring. This honor ties Allen with teammate Delaney for the lead among active ACC players with three such awards each.
The Hokies return to action on Sunday afternoon, as they host Georgia Tech. The game is set for a 1 p.m. tip-off on the ACC Network.
