ATLANTA, Ga. – Virginia Tech guard Malcolm Delaney has been named to the Naismith midseason list of top 30 college basketball players in the nation, announced by The Atlanta Tip-Off Club’s Board of Selectors. The award is based on criteria of player performances from the 2010-11 college basketball season.
Delaney, a senior from Balitmore, Maryland, leads the Hokies in scoring this season and is second in scoring in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He led the Hokies in scoring in each of the last two seasons and is currently fourth in career scoring at Virginia Tech and third in career assists at the school. He is also the career leader in free throw percentage at Tech.
Delaney was a unanimous first team All-ACC selection as a junior and was named a fourth-team All-American by Sporting News. His 667 points scored last season is the seventh-best single-season scoring total in Virginia Tech history.
Delaney is one of five ACC players on the 30-man list. The Naismith Trophy, presented by AT&T, will be awarded at the 2011 NCAA Men’s Final Four in Houston.
Notable former Naismith Men’s College Player of the Year winners include Bill Walton, Johnny Dawkins, Tim Duncan, Kevin Durant and last year’s recipient Evan Turner.
