BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech will host five home indoor track & field meets in 2012, the school announced Thursday, as it unveiled the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field schedules. All five home meets will be held at Rector Field House on campus in Blacksburg.
“We’re excited about our 2012 track & field schedule. It’s a challenging schedule as we will be traveling to some of the best meets offered around the country,” said Tech Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Dave Cianelli. “Indoors, we’re looking forward to hosting some excellent competition here in Blacksburg.”
The Hokies five indoor home meets begin on Jan. 13-14 with the VT Invitational. The following week, Tech hosts the Hokie Invitational on Jan. 20-21. In February, Tech will host the VT Elite Meet on Feb. 3-4 and the VT Challenge on Feb. 17-18. The final home meet of the season is the VT Final Qualifier on March 3.
In addition to the five home indoor meets, Tech will travel to Lynchburg, Va., on Dec. 2 for the Liberty Kickoff and Geneva, Ohio on Feb. 10-11 for the Spire Collegiate Invitational. The 2012 ACC Indoor Championships will be hosted by Boston College in Boston, Mass., from Feb. 23-25 and the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships are March 9-10 in Boise, Idaho.
During the outdoor season, Tech will split the squad based on events during most weekends. The Hokies will send participants to outdoor meets at schools such as, Miami of Florida (Mar. 17), Central Florida (Mar. 23-24), Florida State (Mar. 30-31), Georgia Tech (Mar. 30-31 and May 11-12), NC State (Mar. 30-31), William & Mary (Apr. 6-7), Stanford (Apr. 6-7), Tennessee (Apr. 13-14), Penn (Apr. 26-28), Liberty (May 3) and Clemson (May 11-12).
The 2011 ACC Outdoor Championships will be hosted by Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., from Apr. 19-21. The NCAA East Preliminaries will be May 24-26 at North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla., and the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be June 6-9 at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Tech men’s track & field team is coming off a program-best fifth place national finish at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships, while the women placed tied for 20th at the outdoor national meet.
