BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech men’s tennis assistant coach Christophe Bonadona has been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Bonadona is one of eight assistants to receive the honor across the nation. The national winner will be announced later this month in Stanford, Calif., the site of the 2011 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Championships.
Bonadona is in his second season as the men’s tennis assistant coach at Virginia Tech. He helped the Hokies to a 14-11 season and a trip to the NCAA Championships for the fifth consecutive season as well as a No. 37 national ranking entering the postseason.
The 25-year old Bonadona came to Virginia Tech from Van Der Meer Tennis Academy in Hilton Head, S.C., where he served for two years as a teaching professional. While at Van Der Meer, he instructed and coached elite players during their daily practices and handled travel arrangements to various tournaments. Bonadona was responsible for the design of the strength and conditioning programs at the academy.
Bonadona is a 2007 graduate of Webber International University in Babson, Fla., with a Bachelor of Science degree in sport management and a marketing minor.
“It is nice that Christophe’s hard work and dedication to our tennis program is recognized,” said Virginia Tech head coach Jim Thompson. “He has done an excellent job this year and continues to be one of the bright young coaches in college tennis. Christophe has an excellent eye for the game and I am certain is a good role model for our players. This is a great honor for a very humble yet deserving coach.”
