Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech football team participated in its first scrimmage of the spring, playing Wednesday evening on the practice fields adjacent to the Jamerson Athletics Center.
Logan Thomas, the projected starting quarterback, paced the offense, completing 4 of 6 for 100 yards. His longest completion was 61 yards to Danny Coale against the Hokies’ second-team defense.
David Wilson ran for 21 yards on three carries to lead all rushers, and he caught one pass for eight yards.
Ricardo Young completed one pass for five yards before departing with a foot injury. Mark Leal completed 1 of 7 for seven yards and an interception, and Trey Gresh completed 2 of 5 for 20 yards.
Defensively, Derrick Hopkins had three tackles, including two that were sacks. Alonzo Tweedy, Jeron Gouveia-Winslow and Duan Perez-Means had three tackles as well. Cris Hill recorded the lone interception and Telvion Clark recovered a fumble.
There was no scoring in the controlled scrimmage – Tech’s staff flipped the offense around once it got inside the defense’s 20. There was no punting or kicking either.
“I thought the scrimmage was a little ragged,” Tech head coach Frank Beamer said. “But we expected that. We were working a lot of people, and I think this was a step toward reducing down the number of people we work with.”
The Hokies will hold their first full scrimmage on Saturday at Lane Stadium.
