Big run leads Virginia to 72-37 win

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia used a 23-2 second half run to defeat Virginia Tech, 72-37, Sunday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena. Virginia improved to 12-9 overall and 1-4, while Virginia Tech fell to 9-10 and 0-5 in the conference with its sixth consecutive loss.

After a Nikki Davis (Sr., Lexington, Ky.) three-point basket got Tech within 10 points at 35-25, the Cavaliers put together the big run over the next 6:26 to build a 54-27 lead and the Hokies never threatened.

Alyssa Fenyn (So., Newark, N.Y.) was the only Tech player in double figures with 12 points, including two treys. Tech shot only 27.5% (14-51) from the field and committed 22 turnovers. The 37 points was the fewest points scored by the Hokies in an ACC contest.

Chelsea Shine led Virginia with 16 points and 10 rebounds followed by Ataira Franklin and Whitny Edwards with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Tech will return to action on Thurs., Jan. 27, playing host to Georgia Tech in a 7 p.m. contest.
