GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech forward Jeff Allen has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, for the week ending Jan. 9, 2011. The honor is voted on by a committe of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.
Allen, a senior from Washington, D.C., scored a season-high 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Hokies to their sixth-straight win, 71-59, over Florida State on Saturday in Cassell Coliseum. In coming up with his third-straight double-double, and his fifth in six games, Allen was seven-of-12 from the floor and a career-best 10-of-12 from the line, despite battling a groin injury.
This is the second time this season that a Virginia Tech player has earned this honor, following Malcolm Delaney on Nov. 29. This marks the second time in Allen’s career that he has garnered this award. NC State’s C.J. Leslie was selected the ACC Rookie of the Week.
Allen currently is second in the ACC in rebounding. He is the leader among active ACC players in career rebounds and steals and is second in career blocked shots and fourth in career scoring.
The Hokies return to action on Thursday night, as they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on North Carolina. The game is set for a 9 p.m. tip-off on ESPN.
