Shoe Drive a huge success for Tech cross country and track and field teams

The Virginia Tech cross country and track and field teams held a Shoe Drive on Sept. 25 in which the teams collected used or gently worn shoes to give to charity, and the event was an overwhelming success.

The teams collected 851 pairs of shoes, nearly doubling the 447 pairs they collected at the Shoe Drive last year. The teams also collected $220 in donations that was put towards shipping costs.

All shoes were sent to Soles4Souls, Inc., a company that provides free shoes to people in needthroughout the world. All the shoes will probably be sent to Haiti, as that country continues to recover from a devastating earthquake that occurred earlier this year.

"We distribute shoes to whoever is in need the most," said Nicole Langford, director of donor services for Soles4Souls, Inc. "Right now, our primary efforts are focused towards Haiti, as they are still in great need of help … most likely, the shoes you collected will go to Haiti.â€
