Golfers complete strong showing at State Open

Five current andfuture Virginia Tech golfers all showed well on Sunday in the final round of the2010 SunTrust State Open of Virginia at the7,127 yards, par 72 Independence Golf Club in Midlothian.

 

All five golfersfinished under-par for the event, led by rising senior Garland Green ofTazewell, who finished tied for 12th place with a four-round totalof eight-under-par 280. He fired the best round of Sunday with aseven-under-par 65. Green’s final round included seven birdies and an eagle twoon the 331-yard, par four 12th hole.

 

Evan Beck, an amateurfrom Virginia Beach who is a rising sophomore at Wake Forest, won the titlewith a 20-under-par 268, one stroke ahead of Cameron Yancey of Blackstone. Beck’s20-under-par total equals the record for the State Open.

 

Marshall Bailey, arising senior from Fincastle, finished in 16th place at 281. MikeyMoyers, a rising sophomore from Stanardsville, finished in 23rd placeat 284. Bryce Chalkley, an incoming freshman from Richmond, shot a four-roundtotal of 286 and Aaron Eckstein, a rising senior from Salem, finished in a tiefor 32nd place at 287.
