Green advances to quarterfinals of State Amateur

VirginiaTech golfer Garland Green won his two matches on Thursday and hasadvanced to the quarterfinal round of the 97thVSGA Amateur Championship at 6,940 yards par 72 Belle Haven CountryClub in Alexandria.


Green,a rising senior from Tazewell, tied for fourth in the two rounds ofstroke play and was the sixth seed in match play. Green defeatedStarell Cox of Chesterfield, 3 ans 1 in the first round Thursdaymorning. In the second round, Green defeated Gary Barton ofAlexandria, 2 and 1. He will play Seth Norman of Suffolk at 8:30a.m., on Friday morning. The winner of that match will play thewinner of the Brinson Paolini vs. Paul Woodson match in the semifinalround Friday afternoon.


Twoother Hokies, Mikey Moyers, a rising sophomore from Stanardsville andAaron Eckstein, a rising senior from Salem, advanced to match play,but were forced to play each other in the first round. Ecksteindefeated Moyers, 3 and 1, before falling to Woodson in the secondround, 2 and 1. Hokie Marshall Bailey, a rising senior from Fincastledid not advance out of stroke play.
