Former Hokie golfer Brendon de Jonge is in a three-way tie for the lead after the first round of the US Open at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California on Thursday. De Jonge shot a two-under-par 69 and is tied with Shaun Micheel and Paul Casey. Micheel won the 2003 PGA Championship at the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.
De Jonge fired rounds of 69 and 66 to finishfourth and capture one of the 15 spots available in the 36-hole qualifying last Monday in the US Open Sectional Qualifying at the Brookside Golf &Country Club and The Lakes Golf & Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. This is de Jonge's first US Open appearance. He is scheduled to begin his second round at 7:55 a.m. PDT Friday morning. He is grouped with Bob Estes and Brian Davis.
