BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Delaware Blue Hens opened their consolation match-up of the 2010 Hilton Garden Hokie Classic with Alcorn State by scoring the game’s first 15 points and never surrendered their lead, coasting to a 76-36 victory at Cassell Coliseum Thursday evening.
Delaware (7-4) actually held the Lady Braves without a field goal for more than seven minutes as six Blue Hens scored from the floor, building a 19-3 lead. Lauren Carra scored eight of the team’s 15 points in the early run and finished the contest with 15 points.
Also, helping Delaware to the win was Jaquetta May, who scored a game-high 16 points with six boards, Vanessa Kabongo, 11 points and three assists, Danielle Parker, with nine points and six rebounds, and Sarah Acker, who added five blocks to six points and six boards.
Alcorn State (1-8) ended the Blue Hen run with a pair of made free throws by Sharnika Breedlove at the 15:15 mark. She actually scored the Lady Braves’ first five points, adding another free throw, then connecting on their first field goal at the 12:36 mark. She finished with eight points and six rebounds, while Kiara Ruffin led the team with 10 points and three steals.
Delaware led by 21 at the break and pushed its lead to as many as 40 by the final buzzer. It was the largest margin of victory for the team this season and marked the first time they held an opponent below 40 since a 42-37 victory over VCU on Feb. 7, 2008.
