Hokies struggle, fall to No. 6 Maryland, 7-0

Blacksburg, Va. - Maryland’s offensive attack proved too much for the Hokies, who fell, 7-0, to the Terps on homecoming weekend. Tech is now 3-7-1 on the season, 1-2-1 in conference play. This is the Hokies’ worst loss since Oct. 10, 1984, a 7-0 loss at Virginia.

Maryland came out firing fast, with Matt Kassel scoring in the 5th minute to put the Terps up 1-0. Down 2-0 in the 55th minute, the Hokies inadvertently tipped the ball into their own net off of a Maryland free kick, bringing the score to 3-0. Maryland scored three more goals in the next ten minutes to bring the score to 6-0, with the seventh and final score coming in the 71st minute.

Maryland outshot Tech 15-6, limiting the Hokies’ offense to only one shot in the second half. Greg Cochrane took three of Tech’s six shots, two on goal. James Daly was given the loss at keeper.

Tech will have two days off before resuming action at home Monday, Oct. 11 against Alabama A&M at 7 p.m.
