The NCAA released the graduationsuccess rates (GSR) today and Virginia Tech checked in at 89 percent – its bestnumber since the NCAA started this metric as a way of calculating graduationrates.
The number is based onstudent-athletes who entered college in 2003. The NCAA listed the GSR for allstudent-athletes at 79 percent.
The NCAA's formula takes intoaccount transfer students and is different than the federal government'smethodology. According to the federal government, student-athletes who enteredschool in 2003 graduated at a national average of 64 percent, the highest federal rate everand one point higher than the general student body.
In football, the Hokies had a 79percent GSR – that program’s best number ever. That’s up eight percent fromfootball players who entered school in 2002. Of the football programs ranked inthe top 25, Tech has the third-highest graduation rate behind Stanford (86 percent) and Miami (81percent).
In men’s basketball, the number is75 percent, up eight percent as well from those who entered in college in 2002.
The NCAA average stands at 69percent for football players and 66 percent for basketball players for those entering college in 2003.
