Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG, Va. – In Virginia Tech’s home opener against ACC foe Clemson, both teams went into double overtime but at the end, the score remained 1-1. Virginia Tech is now 1-3-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in ACC play.
A crowd of over 1,300 fans packed Thompson Field to see their Hokies in the home opener, and senior Clarke Bentley got the fans cheering early, netting a goal off a penalty kick in the 19th minute to put the Hokies up 1-0. Tech kept the lead until Clemson’s Riley Sumpter broke away and was one-on-one against Tech’s freshman keeper Kyle Renfro. Sumpter made a move to get past Renfro for the short goal.
Both offenses were quiet in the second half, each being held to only three shots. The teams grew increasingly physical during the second half, earning nine fouls. After regulation was through, both teams played two ten-minute overtime periods, yet neither could convert on their shots, with Tech outshooting Clemson 6-1 in the overtime periods.
Tech’s next match comes on the road against Davidson on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
