Emala, Nonn earn All-ACC Academic honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. Junior captain Allie Emala and sophomore Jessica Nonn were two of 15 athletes named to the 2010 Women’s Lacrosse All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic team as announced by the league’s commissioner on Tuesday. Emala, a three-time all-academic team honoree, and Nonn, a first timer, each led the team in various statistical categories throughout the season, while also excelling in the classroom.

Emala, a Baltimore, Md., native, set a new school single-season draw control record with 91 this year, while also setting a new all-time career mark with 188 draw controls so far in her three-year career. The human development major finished her junior year first on the team in points and assists with 47 and 15, respectively. Her 24 ground balls and 32 goals on the season were both good for second on the squad.

Nonn had a breakout season this past year, as she became the only Hokie to score at least one goal in each of the team’s 17 games this season, setting a new standard for longest scoring streak. The Catonsville, Md., native led Tech in scoring this year with 36 goals, as well as ground balls after scooping up 45 through the season. Nonn’s ground ball count moves her up in the all-time single-season record books for the second year in a row as she now sits in eighth, along with owning the second spot, which she achieved in 2009. Nonn plans to major in psychology.

The conference named Maryland’s Caitlyn McFadden as the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Duke led the way as a team, with eight players named to the squad.
