Bailey, Eckstein start strong at State Open

Virginia Tech golfers Marshall Baileyand Aaron Eckstein got off to strong starts at the 2010 SunTrustState Open of Virginia at the 7,127 yards, par 72 Independence GolfClub in Midlothian on Thursday.


Bailey, a rising senior from Fincastle,shot an opening round five-under-par 67 and is tied for fourth place.Eckstein, a rising senior from Salem, shot four-under-par 68 and istied for eighth. Amateurs Evan Beck and Vincent Nadeau lead the State Open withseven-under-par 65s.


Mikey Moyers, a rising sophomore fromStanardsville, is tied for 40th at even-par 72 and GarlandGreen, a rising senior from Tazewell, is tied for 93rd at76. Hokies head coach Jay Hardwick shot a 78 in the first round,while Moyers' father, PGA Professional Mike Moyers, equaled his sonwith a 72.


The SunTrust State Open of Virginia is a 72-hole, stroke playevent with a field of 168 golfers. The field will be cut to the low70 players and ties following the completion of Friday's secondround.
