Hokie ClubATHENS, Georgia - Virginia Tech senior Yoann Re (Verdun, Quebec, Canada) will be in action on Wednesday during the first day of competition at the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Singles Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus.
Ranked 55th in the latest ITA rankings, Re will face Boris Conkic (Tennessee), ranked No. 36, at 6:30 p.m., in the first round of the singles draw. Conkic and his Volunteer teammates will battle defending champion Southern California today at 6 p.m., for the national title. Re was an All-ACC honoree and received an at-large selection for the second-consecutive season to the tournament, joining Albert Larregola (2008) and Arvid Puranen (2006) as recent Hokies to participate in the event. The Tech duo of Nicolas Delgado de Robles and Pedro Graber participated in the 2007 NCAA Doubles Championships.
Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) is ranked No. 55 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. He posted a 9-12 dual match singles record this season, including a 5-6 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference, playing at the No. 1 position. Along the way, he picked up victories over current No. 12 Eric Quigley (Kentucky), No. 27 Bruno Rosa (Rice), No. 31 Jean-Yves Aubone (Florida State), No. 67 Christopher Nott (Arkansas) and No. 69 Calin Paar (Nebraska).
“Yoann has done a great job of stepping up this spring and I am pleased he has been selected to participate again in the National Championships,” said Virginia Tech head men’s tennis coach Jim Thompson. “This is a great honor. With the experience he gained playing in the national tournament last year, I feel he has the type of game that can do well, and I am very excited for him and our program.”
In order for Re to become an All-American, he must win two matches to finish as one of the final 16 competitors at the Championship.
The winner of the Re/Conkic match will advance to the round of 32 and face the winner of the Bradley Kahn (Stanford)/Artem Baradach (SMU) contest on Thursday. Kahn, a 9-16 seed, is currently ranked No. 13 nationally, while Baradach is ranked No. 59.
