GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Will Mulherin racked up another distance event title as the Virginia Tech track and field squads closed out the regular season at the Aggie Classic in Greensboro, N.C., late Sunday.
Mulherin continued his strong 2010 campaign in Greensboro, winning the 5,000-meters with a career-best time of 13:58.05, coming in just under his former personal-best pace of 13:58.18. The victory was the third-straight 5,000-meter crown for the Yorktown, Va., native and the fourth win overall this season.
Senior Yavgeniy Olhovksy led Tech in the men’s pole vault, as the Hokies finished in the top three spots in the event. Olhovsky cleared 17-01 in the first-place showing, while juniors Hunter Hall and Jared Jodon tied for second. Hall and Jodon both cleared 17-01, but lost to Olhovsky in a jump-off.
In other distance action, freshman Jared Berman ran 9:07.58 in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase to finish second, while fellow freshman Jason Cusack took fourth in the event with a time of 9:11.17. Junior Ryan Will placed third in the men’s 800-meters with a personal-best time of 1:50.06, and junior Nick McLaughlin came in fifth place in the race, finishing in 1:50.77.
On the women’s side, freshman Lauren Pinkston clocked a 2:11.44, a personal best, for fourth place in the women’s 800-meter run. Junior Kelly Phillips and freshman Emma Dejarnette tied for third in the women’s pole vault with clearances of 11-08.50.
The Hokies will return to Greensboro, N.C., on May 27-29 for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds. Preliminary Round qualifiers will be announced by the NCAA on Friday, May 21.
