BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech golf team will open the spring portion of the schedule with a trip to the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The 15-team event, to be played at the par-72, 6,902-yard River Course of the Rio Mar Country Club, will be contested Feb. 21-23.
Playing in the top spot for the Hokies is junior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Va.). Bailey led the Hokies in scoring during the fall season, with a 72.0 stroke average. He finished in the top 21 in all four fall events, including a season-best 11th at the Intercollegiate at the Ridges.
Junior Garland Green (Tazewell, Va.) will play in the two spot. He had the team’s best individual finish in the fall, a second at the Intercollegiate at the Ridges and was second on the team in scoring during the fall. Freshman Mike Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.), who finished fifth at the Ridges, will play the three spot and sophomore Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) will play four. He opened the fall season with a fourth place finish at the VCU Shootout. Junior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Va.) will play at the five position.
This year’s event will be headlined by top-ranked Oklahoma State and No. 10 Texas. In all, the Puerto Rico Classic will play host to 10 teams ranked in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. In addition to the pair of top-10 teams on the slate, the field will also feature No. 12 Alabama, No. 19 Georgia Tech, No. 24 Georgia, No. 28 Clemson, No. 36 Kent State, No. 37 East Tennessee State, No. 40 Virginia Tech and 42nd-ranked Michigan.
