BLACKSBURG, Va. – The men’s and women’s Virginia Tech track and field squads both were ranked 13th in the preseason indoor USTFCCCA national poll the Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.
The Hokie women tallied 63.07 points and enter the season ranked 13th in the women’s poll. The squad is the third-highest ranked ACC squad, behind Florida State at No. 4 and Clemson at No. 9 Texas A&M is the top-ranked women’s team.
On the men’s side, the Hokies sit at No. 13 with 59.70 points. Tech is the second-highest ACC unit on the men’s side, behind Florida State, who is the No. 1 team in the nation entering the season.
This marks the third-straight year national team rankings will be complied by mathematical formulae based on national descending order lists and data taken from previous seasons. For the preseason ranking and early-season rankings, data will be taken from previous seasons as well as the current season. The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potentialof achieving the top spots in the national-team race.
The Virginia Tech track and field squads kick off their 2010 campaign on Jan. 15-16 with the Virginia Tech Invitational at the Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. Events on Friday are tentatively scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
