MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. -- Virginia Tech shot a three-round total of 881 and tied Penn State and Iowa for fourth place in the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va., on Tuesday. The event was played on the par 72, 6,955-yard Manakin Course at Hermitage.
The Hokies shot a three-over-par 291 in Monday morning’s first round, a six-over-par 294 in Monday afternoon’s second round and 296 in Tuesday’s final round.
Sophomore Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Tex.) recorded his best-ever finish for the Hokies, as he posted a three-round total of one-over-par 217 and tied for fourth place. Charlotte’s Corey Nagy fired a six-under-par 210 and won the event by two strokes over U.S. Walker Cup competitor Brendan Gielow of Wake Forest, the leader entering the final round.
Junior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Va.) tied for 20th place at 220 and junior Garland Green (Tazewell, Va.) tied for 24th at 221. Freshman Mikey Moyers (Standardsville, Va.) tied for 35th place at 223 and freshman Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) tied for 72nd at 234. Junior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Va.) played the event as an individual and finished with a total of 228 and tied for 57th place.
UNC Wilmington won the tournament with a three-round total of eight-over-par 872, five strokes ahead of Virginia. Wake Forest was third at 879, two strokes ahead of the Hokies, Hawkeyes and Nittany Lions. Host VCU finshed seventh at 883, UNC Greensboro was eighth at 888, Charlotte was ninth at 890 and ECU and Richmond tied for 10th at 891. Wichita State was 12th at 893, Maryland was 13th at 906 and Mercer was 14th at 909.
The Hokies will next play on Oct. 10-12 at the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship at the par 72, 7,128-yard Brickyard at Riverside golf course in Macon, Ga.
