Five Hokies named to All-ACC Women's Lacrosse Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner John D. Swofford announced the 2009 All-ACC Women’s Lacrosse Academic Team and Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday. Five Hokies were honored by the conference, three of whom have been honored before. Seniors Rachel Culp and Kari Morrison along with sophomores Alexandra Emala, Dylan Garner and Caitlyn Weir were all noted for their outstanding performances in the classroom throughout their college careers. Maryland’s Caitlyn McFadden was named Women’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the conference, as she is one of 16 athletes on the academic team who is a repeat honoree.

Culp recently finished her career at Tech, graduating with a degree in biology. The Kent, Ohio, native was a top performer on the field as well, currently ranking second in school history in career goals (118) and points in a season (70). She also holds third all-time for goals in a season (54) and recently earned a spot on the US Lacrosse team.

Morrison, a Springfield, Va. native, has also been honored for the third time by the conference for her academic performance and recently earned her degree in nutrition and exercise from Tech. The keeper currently holds the school records for career and season ground balls while she also ranks second all-time for career saves (574) and third for season saves (207).

Emala was honored by the conference for a second time for her academic success while studying human development at Tech. The sophomore and Baltimore, Md., native, started and played in all 17 games last year, and finished her second season with 35 goals, 15 assists and 50 points, all good for second on the team.

Garner, a native of Cornelius, N.C., has been named to the academic team for the first time in her two-year career at Tech. The sophomore midfielder started 14 games for the Hokies last season while seeing playing time in all 17. Garner finished the season with 10 goals, five assists and 15 points while working towards her fine arts degree.
