BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s track and field squad placed four athletes on the men’s 2009 Division I All-Academic Track and Field team, the U.S. Track and Field Coaches Association announced on Tuesday.
Junior Matej Muza and freshman Matthias Treff represented the Hokie throwers on the team. Muza placed second in the ACC weight throw competition at the conference indoor meet, while Treff won the ACC javelin title at the conference outdoor meet.
Freshmen Hasheem Halim and Michael Hammond complemented their impressive rookie campaigns with all-academic honors. Halim and Hammond both qualified for the NCAA East Regional in their freshmen years. Halim competed in the triple jump at the regional meet, while Hammond ran in the 1,500-meters.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
