BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech’s Steve Domecus was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference second team on Monday, becoming the first Hokie baseball player to be named to an All-ACC team in Tech’s five seasons in the league.
The first and second teams, as well as the Player, Pitcher, Freshman and Coach of the Year awards, were selected via a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Domecus enjoyed a successful first season in Blacksburg after transferring from Moorpark Junior College in Moorpark, Calif., finishing the year with a .406 batting average to win the ACC’s regular season batting title. He was the first Hokie to hit over .400 over the course of a season since Matt Griswold hit .408 in 1997.
The Novato, Calif., native also added 37 runs scored, 42 runs driven in, 11 doubles, four home runs, six stolen bases and 16 hit-by-pitches. He started 19 games in left field, 10 at catcher and eight at designated hitter.
From Feb. 27 to April 10, Domecus put together a 24-game hitting streak, which was the longest in the ACC this year and was only eight games shy of Virginia Tech’s all-time record.
