Hokies release 2009 schedule

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men’s soccer program announced Friday the 2009 schedule, which includes eight teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season.

The Hokies open the season with a three-game road trip. Tech will travel to Baltimore, Md., for a non-conference battle with UMBC on Sept. 1 and take the pitch in Madison, Wisconsin, for the Badgers adidas Classic. The Hokies will take on host Wisconsin on Sept. 4, and on Sept. 6 will play Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Both games will mark the first time Tech has played each opposition.

Tech will open the gates of Sandra D. Thompson Field for the Hawthorn Suites Hokie Classic on Sept. 11 against former BIG EAST foe and 2008 NCAA Tournament participant South Florida. On Sept. 13, the Hokies will play host to East Tennessee State to wrap up the weekend’s festivities.

To open ACC play, Tech will travel to take on Clemson on Sept. 20. The Hokies will return home for three-straight home games. Patriot League member American comes to Blacksburg for a non-conference showdown on Sept. 23. Tech will play back-to-back ACC matches against the NC State on Sept. 27 and 2008 ACC regular season champion Wake Forest on Oct. 2.

The Hokies will travel to take the pitch against in-state rival Radford on Oct. 6 and follow with a match against ACC and 2008 College Cup Champions Maryland on Oct. 9.

The team will head back to Blacksburg for a five-match home stand. The slate includes three non-conference matches against NCAA Tournament participant Akron on Oct. 13, South Conference member Davidson on Oct. 20 and Tech closes out its out-of-conference and home slate vs. Longwood on Oct. 27. Tech will take the pitch against in-state foe Virginia on Oct. 17, while hosting the Tar Heels of North Carolina on Oct. 24.

The Hokies conclude the season on a road trip for two contests in the conference. Duke will host Tech on Oct. 31 followed by a contest in Chestnut Hill, Mass., against Boston College on Nov. 6.

The postseason begins at the ACC Championship on Nov. 10-14 in Cary, N.C.

Last season, the Hokies finished in ninth in the ACC and ended the season with a 5-13-1 overall record.
