Culp garners All-ACC nod

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech senior Rachel Culp has been named to the 2009 All-ACC team, the league announced Thursday evening. A vote of the conference’s head coaches determined the 20-member squad, which was represented by all six ACC women’s lacrosse programs.

After receiving the honor, Culp joins Kady McBrearty (2005-2008) and Lindsay Pieper (2004-2007) as the only three Hokies to earn All-ACC accolades since Tech joined the league in 2005. The Kent, Ohio, native totaled a team-best 54 goals and 16 assists on the year, while leading the conference in points per game (4.27). Culp added a goal and an assist in Tech’s loss to Virginia in the ACC quarterfinals to conclude her career with 119 goals, the second-best total in Hokie history.

Undefeated Maryland tied North Carolina with a league-high five players on the list. Virginia followed close behind with four honored players. Duke placed three representatives on the squad, while Boston College and Virginia Tech rounded out the All-ACC team with two and one, respectively.

The ACC Women’s Lacrosse Tournament continues with semifinal action on Friday at Thompson Field. Virginia faces Maryland at 4 p.m. after eliminating the Hokies, 13-5, in the quarterfinals. Duke defeated Boston College, 16-7, to earn a spot in the semifinals against North Carolina at 6:30 p.m. For more information concerning the 2009 ACC Tournament, please visit www.theacc.com.
