Spirit squads to hold exhibition on Saturday

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech spirit squads will host one last tune up at Cassell Coliseum on Saturday at 2 p.m., before competing for the NCA/NDA National Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla., on April 9-11.

“I think overall, these are the most talented cheer and dance squads we’ve had at Virginia Tech,” Tech Spirit Coach Rickey Hill said. “We have a lot of returning kids, as well as new kids who have brought talent in. This has been a great year so far, and it can get even better this weekend.

The squads will be performing their national routines in an exhibition on Saturday for the general public at 2 p.m., in Cassell Coliseum, before leaving for Daytona Beach on April 7. The Cheer Squad, HighTechs and HokieBird will all perform.

The NCA National Championships will take place on April 9-11 at the Daytona Beach Convention Center and Bandshell. The Championships are made up of seven dance divisions and 11 cheer divisions. The divisions separate teams by designation of All-Girl or Coed, skill level, university enrollment (Division I, IA, or II), Junior College, or International. Tech is one of nine Division IA cheer squads and 17 Division IA dance squads competing next weekend. The HokieBird will compete against nine other mascots on April 11 at 11:35 a.m. Championship winners are also awarded for Partner Stunts, Group Stunts and Mascot at Stunt Fest Mania on Saturday.

The preliminary competitions at the National Championships will begin on April 9, with the HighTechs performing at 1:30 p.m., and the Cheer Squad competing at 3:30 p.m. The Cheer Squad will automatically advance to the finals on April 10, scheduled for 1:20 p.m. Finals for the dance squad are set for 10:55 a.m.
