Louisville hands Hokies 14-8 loss

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Rookie Jessica Nonn and senior Rachel Culp combined for seven goals, but the Virginia Tech women’s lacrosse team could not overcome the Cardinals’ duo of Bergan Foley and Emily Dashiell as Tech fell to Louisville 14-8 in a non-conference match played on Saturday afternoon at the University of Louisville Lacrosse Stadium.

After dropping the past two contests, the Hokies’ record now stands at 4-6 on the year and 1-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Louisville improves to 6-1 for the season.

Foley opened the scoring with the first goal of the match under two minutes into the contest and would go on to tally four of Louisville’s first five scores. The Hokies’ Dylan Garner (So., Cornelius, N.C.) knotted the score at one-all on a free position shot and the two teams would trade possessions during the next four minutes until Foley struck again to give Louisville the 2-1 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining in the first half.

Another Louisville goal pushed the lead to 3-1 before Culp (Sr., Kent, Ohio) fired a free position shot into the back of the net to bring the score to 3-2. Tech’s Nonn (Fr., Catonsille) and Louisville’s Foley netted two goals apiece over a six-minute span, but the Cardinals closed out the half with two unanswered scores to take a 7-4 advantage into halftime.

Two minutes into the second half, the Hokies trailed 8-5, but could not cut into the Louisville lead any farther as the Cardinals ended the contest with a 6-3 run over the final 27 minutes.

Nonn led the Hokie attack with four goals with Culp right behind her with three scores. Caitlin Wier (So., Cockeysville, Md.) was credited with Tech’s lone assist in the contest. Louisville’s Foley led all scorers with six goals and an assist, while Dashiell totaled six points on three goals and three assists

The two teams were evenly matched with both squads taking 32 shots and Louisville just edging Tech in draw controls, 13-10, and ground balls, 24-21.

Kari Morrison (Sr., Springfield, Va.) played all 60 minutes in goal and made 12 saves.

After two straight road contests, Virginia Tech returns home to face North Carolina in an ACC match at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25.
