Duke downs Tech 21-3

DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s lacrosse team took a four-game win streak to Duke University, but the No. 5 Blue Devils proved too much for the Hokies, handing Tech a 21-3 loss in an Atlantic Coast Conference match played at Koskinen Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Virginia Tech fell to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the ACC, dropping its first contest since suffering a setback against William and Mary on Feb. 25. Duke improved to 7-2 and 1-1 in ACC play.

The first half belonged to the Blue Devils. Duke built a 7-0 advantage by the midway point of the first half and led 13-0 at the intermission, while forcing 15 Tech turnovers and limiting the Hokies to five shots.

Tech got on the board after halftime with a goal from Allie Emala (So., Baltimore, Md.) off a free position shot with 25:39 left in the match. Emala would add another goal nine minutes later, but the Blue Devils would use a 3-0 run to push their lead to 19-2 with 10 minutes to play.

At the 5:02 mark, Shannon Bone (Fr., Pylesville, Md.) netted the Hokies’ final score of the match, however Duke would add two more goals to close out the contest with the 21-3 final score.

The Hokies greatly improved in the second frame, cutting their number of turnovers in half and taking 12 shots to the Blue Devils’ 13.

Kari Morrison (Sr., Springfield, Va.) started her ninth game of the season and made 13 saves on the afternoon.

Tech completes a two-game road swing at Louisville Saturday, March 21, at 1 p.m. before returning to ACC action at home against North Carolina on Wednesday, March 25, at 4 p.m.
