KNOXVILLE, Tenn. –The Virginia Tech H2Okies competed in the final day of the NCAA Zone B Qualifier with the men and women competing in the platform event. Junior Mikey McDonald was the only Hokie diver to qualify for the NCAA Championships for Tech.
“The Zone B Qualifier is one of the toughest regions in the country,” said head diving coach Ron Piemonte. “Mikey McDonald had an exceptional showing in both spring board events after competing with an Olympian, two world championship competitors and two NCAA Champions. To finish fifth in the 1- and 3-meter events is quiet an accomplishment.”
McDonald, who last year was an honorable mention All-American, placed 16th in the platform event. The junior solidified a position in the NCAA Championships after claiming fifth place in the 3-meter dive on Saturday.
After qualifying for the NCAA Championships, McDonald will compete in all three diving events.
For the women divers, freshman Cara Murnan had a stellar showing in the platform dive for the H2Okies. Murnan posted an eighth place effort, finishing with a score of 474.85, in her first appearance at the Qualifier.
The H2Okie women swimmers will take their shot at the NCAA Championships on March 19-21 in College Station, Texas. Results will be posted upon conclusion of each day’s action on www.hokiesports.com.
