Hokies, Cavaliers to meet for third time

BLACKSBURG The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team will face Virginia Thursday night at 8 p.m. in the opening round of the 32nd ACC Women’s Basketball Championship. The event is being held at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C..

Tech (12-17, 2-12) enters the tournament as the No. 11 seed while the Cavaliers are the No. 6 seed. The Hokies tied Miami and Clemson with identical conference records and the three teams were all 1-1 in games between each other. Miami earned the No. 10 seed by virtue of its win over No. 8 seed NC State and Tech took the No. 11seed with its’ head-to-head win over Clemson.

Virgina (22-8, 8-6) lost, 74-66, at Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon and fell to the No. 6 seed while the Yellow Jackets earned the fifth seed with the win. Virginia, ranked No. 22 in the Associated Press poll and No. 19 in the ESPN/USA Today poll, defeated Tech, 75-69, in Blacksburg and 69-61 in Charlottesville.

The winner of the Tech-UVa contest will face third seed Duke Friday night at 8 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
