Hokie ClubIOWA CITY, Iowa – Virginia Tech used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Iowa, 70-64, in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa on Tuesday night. With the victory, the Hokies improve to 5-1, while the Hawkeyes fall to 2-5.
The Hokies fell behind 8-1 in the first two minutes of the contest, but outscored Iowa 33-20 to take a 34-28 lead into intermission. Tech was spurred on by a pair of three-pointers by freshman Ben Boggs, who came off the bench to play a season-high 15 minutes.
The game remained close throughout the second half. Iowa took a 54-53 lead on a lay-up by Jarryd Cole with 6:27 remaining, but the Hokies then went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to seal the game.
Malcolm Delaney led a balanced Hokie scoring attack with 18 points and five assists. Terrell Bell added 13 points and Jeff Allen and Victor Davila scored 10 points each. Iowa’s Anthony Tucker led all scorers with 24 points, while Cole added 10 points.
The Hokies outshot the Hawkeyes, 46.6 percent to 44.9 percent. Tech committed just five turnovers, while forcing Iowa into 11 turnovers. Tech also won the battle of the boards, 34-27, including a 12-6 advantage on the offensive glass.
The Virginia Tech victory evens the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at 3-3 entering Wednesday night’s final five games. The ACC has won all 10 previous events.
The Hokies return to action on Sunday, Dec. 6, as they host Georgia at 3:30 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
