GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Virginia Tech forward Jeff Allen has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 13, 2009, in a vote by a committe of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.
Allen, a junior from Washington, D.C., averaged 18.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists as the Hokies ran their record to 8-1 with a home win over VMI and a road victory at Penn State. On the week, Allen was 14-for-22 from the field (.636) and seven-of-nine (.778) from the free throw line.
Allen opened the week with a 24-point, 13-rebound performance in a 98-73 win over the visiting Keydets Wednesday. Three nights later, in a 66-64 win over the Nittany Lions, the 6-7, 230-pound junior turned in his 21st career and second consecutive double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
This is the first ACC Player of the Week honor of Allen’s career and he is the first Hokie to garner the award this season. Teammate Malcolm Delaney won the award last January. Wake Forest’s Ari Stewart earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors.
The Hokies take the week off for exams before returning to action on Saturday night at 7 p.m., as Tech hosts Charleston Southern in Cassell Coliseum.
