Volleyball inks two

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball squad announced the signing of Samantha Gostling and Tori Hamsher to National Letters of Intent, the athletics department announced on Wednesday.

“We signed two of the best attackers in the country,” Tech head coach Chris Riley said. “We expect them to make a large and immediate impact on our program when they arrive in Blacksburg.”


Samantha Gostling, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter,hails from Charlotte, N.C., and attended Audrey Kell High School. She played club for the Carolina Juniors. Gosling was named to prepvolleyball.com’s Top 100 Senior Aces this season, after registering 453 kills and 275 digs. She also hit .344 on the year, while tallying 50 service aces and 40 blocks en route to leading the Knights to the North Carolina 4A state title match for the first time in school history.


“Sam is one of the best outside hitters in the country,” Riley said. “She has all the natural tools to be one of the best attackers to ever play here.”


Tori Hamsher, a 6-foot-3 middle blocker, comes to Virginia Tech from Nazareth Area High School in Bath, Pa. Hamsher played for Synergy Volleyball Club. She received Lehigh Valley Conference Player of the Year honors as a senior and earned a spot on prepbvolleyball.com’s Top 100 Senior Aces list. Last season, she registered 228 kills on a .592 hitting percentage, while recording 114 blocks, and took the Eagles to the District XI semifinals.


“Tori is a versatile middle blocker, who can hit off one or two feet,” Riley said. “She plays over 10 feet and should see playing time right away.”


The Virginia Tech volleyball squad travels south to take on Clemson and Georgia Tech on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
