Hokie ClubMADISON, Wis. – After being held scoreless in a double-overtime meeting against the Badgers on Friday night, the Virginia Tech Hokies (1-1-1) offense displayed its attacking power on Sunday at McClimon Complex, scoring the first goal in the 17th minute of play and adding a second goal to ensure a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1-2-0). With the win, the Hokies' took first in the Middleton Sports and Fitness Invitational.
Tech finished 1-0-1 in play over the weekend, going undefeated and earning their first win of the season.
The Hokies wasted no time in getting the ball up the field in the first half, as co-captain James Gilson earned the first shot within seconds of kick off. It was newcomer Koen Oost, though, who put the Hokies on the board initially with a shot inside the near post from 20 yards out, good for his first goal of the season. Albert Alwang collected an assist on the play.
The Tech offense commanded in the second half as well. Following an early shot from Panther’s Eric Frazier, the Hokies put together a string of shots from Charlie Campbell, Gregory Cochrane and Luiz Yamashita, combining for a season-high 10 shots throughout the half and doubling the Panthers’ half total.
Campbell, who was an active member of the Hokies’ offense all weekend, provided Tech with an insurance point that would prove to be the game-winner, notching his first goal of the season with nearly 15 minutes left to play in the second half. On a pass from Gilson, Campbell, who was inside the box, gave a strong first touch to send the ball into the right corner of the net to increase the Hokies’ lead.
The Panthers then retaliated with a goal of their own to prevent the shutout with less than two minutes to play in the game. From 15 yards out, midfielder Robert Refai snuck a low shot in the net past Brendan Dunn.
Tech amassed 14 shots throughout the match, while Dunn secured his first win of the season, collecting three saves.
Defensive backs Alexander Baden and David Fiorello and midfielders Koen Oost and Gregory Cochrane were named to the All-Tournament Team, while Charlie Campbell was named the Tournament's Offensive MVP.
The Hokies advance to 1-1-1 on the season, after finishing the weekend undefeated. The squad will be back in action for their first regular season home games next weekend at Thompson Field, hosting South Florida on Friday night and East Tennessee State on Sunday night.
