BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s cross country squad captured the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational title with 29 points, while the women’s squad placed third at the meet on Friday at the Tech Cross Country Course in the Hokies’ second competition of the season.
The Hokie men won their second straight meet after taking the VT Cross Country Relays crown on Sept 9. Sophomore Will Mulherin led Tech with a third-place showing, crossing the finish line in the 7.6k race in 23:46.9. Sophomore Brian Welch and junior Matt Kroetch followed Mulherin, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively. Freshman Jason Cusack placed ninth, and junior Eddie Judge earned 10th to round out the Hokie team scoring.
Tech racked up 29 points in the championship effort, followed by Florida State, who came in second with 50 points. UNC Charlotte took third with 92 points, followed by Ohio in fourth and Wake Forest fifth with 117 and 121 points, respectively.
On the women’s side, sophomore Sammy Dow was the top Hokie finisher, taking 15th in the 4.6k race with a time of 17:17.5. Junior Lindsey King, who teamed up with junior Jessica Trapeni to win the VT Cross Country Relays two weeks ago, placed 19th, followed by sophomore Lauren Lemieux, making her cross country debut, in 20th place. Trapeni and sophomore Lauren Pinkston closed out the Tech scoring, crossing the finish line in 23rd and 30th, respectively.
The Tech women placed third overall with 100 total points. Florida State won the meet with 26 points, and Wake Forest tallied 61 points to finish runner-up. Ohio and USC Upstate tied for fourth with 119 points each.
Virginia Tech will next travel to Boone, N.C., for the Highland Duel on Oct. 2, their first road meet of the season. Results will be available on hokiesports.com following the conclusion of the meet.
