NCAA Men's Tennis singles brackets announced

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Virginia Tech junior Yoann Re (Verdun, Quebec, Canada) will be in action on Wednesday during the first day of competition of the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Singles Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University.

Ranked 55th in the latest ITA rankings, Re will face Illinois’ Dennis Nevolo, the Big Ten Freshman of Year and ranked No. 39, at 11 a.m., Eastern Time, in the first round of the singles draw. The All-ACC honoree received an at-large selection to the tournament, joining Albert Larregola (2008) and Arvid Puranen (2006) as recent Hokies to participate in the event. The Tech duo of Nicolas Delgado de Robles and Pedro Graber participated in the 2007 NCAA Doubles Championships.

Re posted a 20-11 dual match singles record this season, including a 4-1 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference, playing at the No. 1 position. Along the way, he picked up victories over current No. 14 Dominic Inglot (Virginia), No. 25 Justin Kronauge (Ohio State), No. 28 Austen Childs (Louisville), No. 83 Slah Mbarek (TCU), and No. 117 Carlos Alvarez (Clemson).

“Yoann has done a great job of stepping up this spring and I am pleased he has been selected to participate in the National Championships,” said Virginia Tech head men’s tennis coach Jim Thompson. “This is a great honor! Now that Yoann is 100 percent healthy, I feel he has the type of game that can do well there and I am very excited for him and our program.”

In order for Re to become an All-American, he must win two matches to finish as one of the final 16 competitors at the championships.

The winner of the Re/Nevolo match will advance to the round of 32 and face the winner of the Reid Carlton (Duke)/Nate Schnugg (Georgia) contest on Thursday. Carleton is currently ranked No. 42 nationally while Schnugg, a 9-16 seed, is ranked No. 12.
