GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech pitcher Justin Wright was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday for his efforts in the Hokies’ upset of No. 11 Miami on April 25.
The Chesterfield, Va., native turned in a commanding, eight-inning, 10-strikeout performance in the series’ second game, leading Tech to a 7-4 road victory and its third win over a top-20 program this season. The 10 strikeouts doled out by the sophomore was a new career high, and he tossed his fourth straight game of at least seven innings. He has earned the win in each of those starts to improve to 5-1, and he lowered his season ERA to 3.27.
Wright only allowed eight base runners over his eight innings, as he continued his dominance over the Hurricanes. The left-hander threw his first collegiate complete game last year to upset Miami when the Hurricanes were ranked No. 1 in the nation.
Wright joins catcher Anthony Sosnoskie as Hokies who have been honored by the conference this season, with Sosnoskie having been named the league’s Player of the Week after the opening weekend of 2009. Wright is the first Tech pitcher to earn an ACC baseball weekly award since Ryan Kennedy was honored twice in 2005. The only other Hokie on the list was third baseman Bryan Thomas, who collected a Player of the Week nod in 2006.
The Hokies return to action on Tuesday at English Field with a contest against High Point at 5:30 p.m.
