KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Despite severe weather, which delayed events for an hour and a half, the Virginia Tech track and field squad put together several impressive performances at the Sea Ray Relays on Friday at the Tom Black Track in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Tech sprinters highlighted the Hokies’ first day of the meet. Freshman Nick Vaughn placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.34. Vaughn won the fourth heat of the event by half a second. Freshman Aunye Boone replicated Vaughn’s showing in the women’s 200-meter dash. Boone captured the third heat of the event, earning a time of 24.21.
Fellow freshmen Ogechi Nwaneri and Keith Ricks battled windy conditions to place fourth and fifth in the men’s and women’s 100-meter dash, respectively. Nwaneri won the second heat of the event with a time of 11.57, while Ricks clocked a 10.45 to win the third heat of the race.
In field action, freshman Hasheem Halim continued a strong outdoor season with a second-place finish in the men’s triple jump. The Lilburn, Ga., native leaped a season-best, regional-qualifying 49-08.50. The jump ranks Halim fifth among Tech’s all-time performers in the event.
On the women’s side, freshman Abby Schaffer regionally qualified in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-07.50. The Easton, Pa., native, who qualified for the indoor national meet in the pole vault, took sixth in the event.
