Distance medley relay squad automatically qualifies

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Virginia Tech track and field squad sent the distance medley relay squad to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Alex Wilson Invitational on Friday, where the quartet ran an automatic-qualifying time en route to a third-place finish in the event.

The unit, composed of sophomore Eddie Judge, freshman Nick Vaughn, sophomore Ryan Witt and senior Billy Berlin, clocked a school-record time of 9:30.24 to come in under the automatic-qualifying time of 9:36.20, and win the second heat of the event. The Hokies placed third overall in the event.

Judge led the group off strongly, running a 2:55.6 in the opening 1,200-meter leg, Vaughn followed with a time of 47.40 in the 400-meter leg. Witt, who captured the 800-meter title at last weekend’s ACC Championships, earned a split of 1:49.00 in the 800-meter portion, and Berlin passed a group of five down the straightaway to secure the victory in the heat. Berlin earned a time of 3:57.80 in the anchor 1,600-meter leg.

The rest of the Hokie track and field squad will compete in the Final Qualifier on Saturday at the Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. Results will be available on hokiesports.com following the conclusion of the meet.
