Hokie ClubCORAL GABLES, Fla. – Virginia Tech outscored Miami, 11-6, in the extra session and defeated Miami, 88-83, in overtime at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla., on Sunday night.
The Hokies, now 14-5 overall and 4-1 in ACC action, came back from a five-point deficit with 8:22 remaining to take a 77-74 lead on a jumper by A.D. Vassallo with 54 seconds to play. Brian Asbury then tied the game with a three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining to tie the game at 77-77. Tech held the ball for a final shot, but was unable to score and the game went to overtime.
In the extra session, the Hurricanes jumped out to an 81-74 lead with just under four minutes remaining, but Tech would not go away. The Hokies took the lead for good at 84-83 with 1:50 left on a Malcolm Delaney three-pointer from the deep corner with the shot clock expiring. Tech hit its free throws down the stretch and held off the Canes for the 88-83 final.
Delaney recorded a career-high with 29 points and Vassallo added 28 points in the win. Vassallo scored 19 of his points in the second half and overtime period. Jeff Allen scored 17 points and added four steals and Hank Thorns recorded a career-high eight assists. Dwayne Collins scored 23 points to lead three Hurricanes in double figures.
The Hokies return to Cassell Coliseum for a 7 p.m. game on Thursday night against nationally-ranked Clemson. The game will be televised by either ESPN or ESPN2.
