CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Nicolas Delgado de Robles and Luka Somen pulled off an upset Sunday morning to capture the A-1 doubles title at the UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational. The Hokies also fared well in consolation matches on the final day of the tournament. The event was scheduled to be played at the Snyder Tennis Center on the University of Virginia campus but inclement weather forced the event indoors at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
Delgado (Sr., Madrid, Spain)/Somen (Fr., Karlovac, Croatia) upset 33rd-ranked Houston Barrick/Sanam Singh (Virginia), 8-5, in the championship match. In A-3 doubles, the Commonwealth duo of Graber (VT)/Sunderland (UVa) won, 8-5, over Ogrizek/Salec (Radford) in the A-3 Backdraw 3rd place match.
Delgado de Robles, ranked No. 75 nationally, routed #113 Matteo Fago (Tennessee), 6-2, 6-0, in the QF A-1 Backdraw final, while Pedro Graber (Jr., Santiago, Chile) cruised past Lee Singer (Virginia), 6-2, 6-1, in the A2 Rd. 32 Backdraw Final.
Three members of the team will travel to Tulsa, Okla. to participate in the D'Novo ITA All-American Championships next week. Brandon Corace (Sr, Naples, Fla.) and Sebastien Jacques (So., Magog, Quebec, Canada) will participate in Pre-Qualifying, Oct. 1-3, while Delgado de Robles will see his first action in the Qualifying round on Oct. 6-8. All three players will be trying to advance into the Main Draw, Oct. 9-12. The event will be played at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
