Hokie ClubCHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Nicolas Delgado de Robles won his first match Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational. The event was scheduled to be played at the Snyder Tennis Center on the University of Virginia campus but inclement weather forced the event indoors at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
Delgado de Robles (Sr., Madrid, Spain), ranked No. 75 nationally, received a first round bye in A-1 singles then defeated Matt Kecki (Southern Cal), 6-4, 6-4, and will face Drew Courtney (Virginia) in the quarterfinals. Luka Somen (Fr., Karlovac, Croatia) defeated Leif Sunderland (Virginia), 6-2, 6-2, in his opening round A-1 match then lost, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, match to No. 117 Matteo Fago.
In A-2 singles, Pedro Graber (Jr., Santiago, Chile) dropped his opening match, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, versus No. 31 Enrique Olivares (East Tennessee State), but bounced back to defeat Matt Brewer (Tennessee), 6-2, 7-5, in the consolation round.
Delgado/Somen edged Kecki/Magdas (Southern Cal), 8-6, in the A-1 doubles quarterfinals and will battle Dimitrov/Michel (Duke) in the semifinals. In A-3 doubles, the Commonwealth duo of Graber (VT)/Sunderland (UVa) fell, 9-7, to Sandgren/Smith (Tennessee) and will play Saturday in the consolation round.
The event concludes on Sunday with finals in all brackets.
