Weaver struggles on day one at U.S. Amateur

Virginia Tech golfer Drew Weaver shotan opening round four-over-par 74 and is tied for 135thplace at the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship at the 7,281-yard, par 70No.2 Course at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst,N.C., on Monday morning.

Weaver, a rising senior from HighPoint, N.C., was three over par after his first nine holes, despiteat birdie on his first hole. He double-bogeyed the third hole, his12th hole of the day, to fall to five over for the round,but birdied the fifth hole to get back to plus-four.

He will tee off at 1:05 p.m., inTuesday afternoon's second round from the first tee on the No. 4Course. The top 64 advance following the conclusion of stroke play onTuesday. Weaver has advanced out of stroke play in each of the pasttwo years.
