Virginia Tech golfer Drew Weaverrecorded his best finish ever in a PGA Tour event and narrowly missedthe cut at the 2008 Wyndham Championship on Friday afternoon at the7,117-yard, par 70 Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
Weaver, a rising senior from HighPoint, N.C., fired his second consecutive one-under-par 69 andfinished with a two-round total of two-under-par 138. He tied for79th place overall and missed the cut by one stroke.
This is Weaver's fourth appearance asan amateur at a professional event of this year and it marks the first time he has finished under par for such a tournament. He wasinvited into the field on a sponsor's exemption.
Weaver teed off Friday afternoon on thefirst tee and parred his first 13 holes before bogeying the par-four14th hole. He got back to even for the round with a birdieon far-four 17th and then finished with a birdie on thepar-four 18th.
There is no rest for the weary, asWeaver is scheduled to tee off on Monday morning at 7:50 a.m., at the2008 U.S. Amateur Championship on the historic No. 2 Course at thePinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. Both SedgefieldCountry Club and No. 2 at Pinehurst were designed by famed golfcourse architect Donald Ross.
