Hokies slotted fifth in the ACC

The Virginia Tech men's soccer team was selected to finish fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference this fall. The conference's nine coaches voted on the seeding with the results being announced by the ACC this afternoon. Tech was awarded 45 points.

The defending national champion, Wake Forest, was selected as the 2008 ACC men's preseason favorite, topping seven out of nine preseason league ballots.

The Hokies will head to Portland, Ore., to open the 2008 regular season, marking the first west coast appearance in school history while participating in the Pilots Nike Classic. Tech will play host Portland on August 29, followed by a non-conference match against Washington on August 31.

Tech's home debut is set for September 5 against Hofstra on the opening night of this year's Hawthorn Suites Hokie Invitational.

Last season the Hokies finished in a three-way tie for third in the ACC. Tech placed third in the final NSCAA/adidas National Coaches Poll with a 14-4-5 overall record, while qualifying for its first College Cup in school history. The Hokies have made it into the NCAA Tournament three consecutive years and four times in six seasons under Weiss.
